Introduction:

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trekking stands out as one of Nepal's most popular and exemplary Annapurna Trekking Destinations, contributing the best perspectives of the Annapurna Mountain Range and the Dhaulagiri Mountain Range. The breathtaking mountain scenery, the beautiful ethnic villages, and many other factors justify the popularity of Ghorepani Poon Hill trekking package. The most remarkable significance of the Annapurna Ghorepani Trek is the favorable elevation of Poon Hill, trekkers will witness the overwhelming sunrises and sunsets over the Himalayas.

Poon Hill Trekking is Nepal's most picturesque short trek, popularly known as Sunrise View Trek. This trekking route is also considered simple, as we don't have to encounter any of the hardships that generally trekkers face during high-altitude trekking. Ghorepani trek starts and ends in Pokhara city, located 200 km west of Kathmandu, which takes 6 hours by bus and 30 minutes by flight from Kathmandu.. There is another one-and-a-half-hour drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, from where your trek of a lifetime takes place.

Where does the Poon Hill trek begin and end?

The Poon Hill Trek begins with a short drive towards Nayapul from Pokhara, which will take around one hour and 30 minutes max. After reaching Nayapul, we show our permits first at the checkpoint and start trekking towards Tikhedhunga. The first day of the walk is going to be sunny. On the second day, we start our hike from Tikhedhunga towards Ghorepani via Ulleri, where the steepness of Ulleri is waiting for us. Then, we enter the Ulleri village and the shady jungle to reach Nanghethati and have lunch at Birethanti.

Then we reach lower Ghorepani, where there is a very good coffee shop. Nepal recommends having coffee there if you have time. On the big day of our trip, we rise early today and then go towards Poon Hill, where we will witness one of the most beautiful sunrises of our lifetime. Spend some time there with the majestic 360-degree panoramic view of the mountains.

Then we return to our teahouse, have breakfast, and head towards Tadapani, one of the best walks. We reach the top of the hill and start descending, walking along the river, and having lunch in the silent environment of nature before heading towards Tadapani. After spending the night at Tadapani, we rise early the next day, go towards Ghandruk, and then return back to Pokhara after completing our trek.

Trekking distance: Nayapul to Tikhedhunga 13 kilometers

Your journey of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek begins from the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara. You begin your day with a fulfilling and nutritious breakfast in Pokhara. After breakfast, you set out on a scenic drive towards Nayapul via a private or shared vehicle. The road distance from Pokhara to Nayapul is approximately 42 km, which, on average, takes about 2-3 hrs depending on traffic conditions.

The route to Nayapul passes through the picturesque hills of the Annapurna region. Along the way you will be mesmerized with the scenic beauties of flowing rivers, waterfalls, terraced farmlands, and traditional villages that reflect the rural lifestyle of Nepal. The notable settlements along the route include Naudanda, Kande, and Lumle before reaching Nayapul.

Upon arrival in Nayapul, you begin your trekking journey towards Tikhedhunga. You will be walking along the Modi River upstream to Birethanti. Birethanti serves as the primary checkpoint for the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), where trekkers headed to areas such as Poon Hill and Mardi Himal must register their permits.

From Birethanti, you continue your journey along the banks of the Bhurungdi Khola. The route offers a pleasant walking experience through lush green forests, beautiful rural settlements, and majestic waterfalls. After about 3-5 hrs of walking, depending upon the walk pace and covering a distance of about 10-13 kms from Nayapul to Tikhedhunga, you finally arrive at Tikhedhunga. Tikhedhunga is a small and charming village surrounded by hills and rivers located at an altitude of 1480 m above sea level. This is an ideal introduction to the Annapurna region.

Upon arrival, you settle into your accommodation. You can relax and re-energize after your first day of trekking. Have dinner and stay overnight at Tikhedhunga.

  • Max. Altitude:2050 m/ 6,726 ft
  • Accommodation:Tea House/ Lodge
  • Time:5-6 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner

Difficulty level: moderate (3300 stairs)

Trekking distance: 8 Kilometers

After breakfast at Tikhedhunga, you begin one of the most challenging yet rewarding phases of the entire trek as you head to Ghorepani via Ulleri. Initially, the trek from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri is a short but notoriously steep section of the Poon Hill Trail. It covers a distance of approximately 3-5 kms, but since the elevation gain from Tikhedhunga (1480 m) to Ulleri (2010 m) is approximately 530 m and this elevation is compressed within this short distance (3-5 kms), it takes about 3-4 hrs to conquer this steep route. One of the main highlights of this segment is a long continuous staircase, which is assumed to have over 3300 stone steps.

This section is physically demanding but offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills and glimpses of the Annapurna range along the way. Upon reaching Ulleri, you can enjoy the peaceful rural environment and natural scenery of the surrounding valleys and snow-capped peaks.

From Ulleri, the trek continues through the dense and cool shades of pine and rhododendron forests, creating a cool and refreshing walking experience. The trekking route follows gentle ups and downs through lush woodlands that make the journey absolutely enjoyable.

As you move higher, the natural beauty of the Annapurna region becomes more prominent, with occasional openings in the forest revealing spectacular mountain views. After about 4-5 hrs of trekking from Ulleri and covering a distance of approximately 8-10 kms from Ulleri, you finally arrive at Ghorepani, a beautiful mountain village known for its panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Located at an altitude of about 2860 m above sea level, this charming settlement is one of the most popular stops in the Annapurna region and serves as a gateway to the famous Poon Hill viewpoint.

Upon arrival at Ghorepani, you settle into your accommodation. Relax and recover from the strenuous trek day, enjoy the evening, have lunch and dinner, and stay overnight at Ghorepani.

Today is the signature day of the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek. Early in the morning, before sunrise, you will wake up and prepare to leave with your guide to the main highlight of this trek, the marvelous view point that is Poon Hill. It is one of Nepal’s most iconic sunrise view points. The Poon Hill viewpoint is located at an altitude of 3210 m above sea level and hence an elevation gain of roughly 340-360 m from Ghorepani (2810 m) to the Poon Hill summit (3210 m). The name “Poon Hill” is derived from the ethnic group called Poon, who are the native residents of Ghorepani and its surrounding areas. The hike takes about 45 mins to 1 hour depending upon the pace.

Poon Hill offers magnificent, panoramic views of some of the most beautiful mountain peaks in Nepal, including West Dhaulagiri, the Annapurna massif, Machhapuchhre (Mt. Fishtail), Manaslu, and even Ganesh Himal. The wide Himalayan panorama stretches for nearly 650 kilometers, making it one of the finest mountain viewpoints in the country. The sunrise over these towering peaks creates an unforgettable experience and is one of the biggest highlights of the entire trek.

After those jaw-dropping sceneries, you will descend back to Ghorepani for your breakfast. After a fulfilling breakfast, you will continue your trek towards Tadapani. The total distance of this segment is approximately 10 kms, which takes about 5-6 hrs depending on the pace. The trail will pass through beautiful rhododendron, pine, and bamboo forests with gentle ascents and descents along the way. You will be stopping along the way at a local tea house for lunch.

Upon arrival at Tadapani, you settle into your accommodation, relax, and enjoy the panoramic views from Tadapani. Located at an altitude of 2630 m above sea level, Tadapani is a scenic village surrounded by dense forests and mountain views. Rest, have dinner, and stay overnight at Tadapani.

  • Max. Altitude:2630 m/ 8,497 ft
  • Accommodation:Tea House/ Lodge
  • Time:8 hours
  • Meals:Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner

After breakfast at Tadapani, you commence your final day of the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek as you descend towards Ghandruk. The distance from Tadapani to Ghandruk is approximately 8 kms, which takes about 3-4 hrs depending on the pace. The trail initially passes through dense forested paths, offering a peaceful and refreshing walk through the natural beauty of the Annapurna region.

As you continue the path, your vision gradually opens up with occasional views of Mt. Annapurna and Machhapuchhre (Mt. Fishtail) through the forest-vegetated trail. The descent is steady, passing through Bhasi Kharka and other small forest areas along the way.

After multiple hours of descent, you will arrive at Ghandruk. Located at an altitude of 2012 m above sea level, Ghandruk is one of the most prominent and beautiful Gurung villages in Nepal. This traditional settlement offers stunning views of the Annapurna range and provides a unique opportunity to experience the rich culture and hospitality of the Gurung community.

Ghandruk will also be your lunch stop, where you can enjoy authentic local cuisine while relaxing in a village atmosphere surrounded by mountain views. In some places, cultural programs featuring traditional music and dance are available, offering deeper insight into local life and traditions.

After some quality time spent at Ghandruk, you continue your descent towards Nayapul via Birethanti. From Nayapul, you board a vehicle and drive back to Pokhara, marking the end of your trekking journey. Upon arrival in Pokhara, your Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek with Holiday Tours Nepal comes to an end.
